Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall: tough victory for the Scotsman

Scotland’s Josh Taylor defended his four super lightweight belts against England’s Jack Catterall in the main event of Top Rank’s boxing night at The SSE Hydro, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. The fight was much closer than expected, and the unified champion ended up winning by split decision.

Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall

josh taylor came into this fight as the undisputed super lightweight (140 lbs) champion and was defending for the first time his 4 belts and his undefeated record in 18 professional fights. His opponent was Englishman Jack Catterall, who was also undefeated with a 26-0 record. Despite the good record and positioning in the rankings of this weight class, Josh Taylor arrived as a great favorite to win the fight, as Catterall still did not have big names in his professional record.

The fight was evenly matched from the beginning, with Jack Catterall trying to dominate and leave everything in the first rounds of the fight. For his part, Josh Taylor tried to impose his boxing and as the rounds passed he felt more confident, however, there was never a clear superiority by either boxer.

In round 8 we saw the unexpected, Jack Catterall knocked Taylor down after a hard punch, and although the champion got to his feet, he transmitted the concern to his team, to the fans who chanted his name, and to all boxing followers.

In the last rounds of the fight, there was little boxing on the part of both boxers, as they were more dedicated to hugging each other and lowering the revolutions of the fight. For this reason, in round 10 the referee takes a point away from Catterall, leaving the fight in a draw for many until that moment.

The last 2 rounds of the fight were remarkably even, however, Royal Boxing News, as well as the official judges, saw Taylor winning those rounds. However, the referee also deducted a point from Taylor for throwing a punch after the final bell of round 11.

For this reason, once the bout was over there was no clear winner, because besides being an extremely even fight, both boxers suffered points deductions. At the end of the night, the champion took the victory by split decision, and left the challenger with a bitter taste that to this day keeps him thinking that he was the winner of that fight.
