Joe Smith Jr will now face Steve Geffrard: Callum Johnson leaves the bout for positive Covid 19.
On January 15, Joe Smith Jr. and Callum Johnson were scheduled to face each other for the WBO light heavyweight championship, however, in the last hours Johnson tested positive in the Covid 19 test and was withdrawn from the fight. The organizers of the event and Smith Jr’s team quickly looked for a replacement, and found boxer Steve Geffrard, who will now be the second man in the main event of the boxing day.
Joe Smith Jr vs Steve geffrard
Steve Geffrard will now be the boxer to face WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr on January 15. He is a 31 year old American boxer with a professional record of 18-2, who has yet to face any big name boxer in his fight history.
Steve Geffrard was scheduled to box Gonzalo Andreasen on January 8, but considering the circumstances, and that the Top Rank event with Joe Smith as the headliner is of much greater relevance within the boxing world, he has set aside his bout to now face the division champion.
It was very difficult to find a fighter who would pose a greater challenge to Joe Smith Jr, since many well-ranked boxers have fought recently, some others are not in the right physical condition, and others will simply be discarded by the champion and his team. Either way, Joe Smith Jr will fight on January 15, and will come in as a huge favorite against Steve Geffrard, from then on we will wait to see what steps these fighters take.

Will be reconsidered the fight against Callum Johnson?
British Callum Johnson had to pull out of this bout for testing positive for Covid 19, and unfortunately disintegrates what was speculated to be a great fight for the WBO light heavyweight championship. In this situation, what will happen with this boxer?
Johnson remains a great contender at 175 lbs, and therefore creates uncertainty as to whether his recovery will have the benefit of fighting the champion. This uncertainty grows considering the latest statement from Top Rank, where they mentioned that Joe Smith could choose to fight Callum Smith or Anthony Yarde.
Under these circumstances, what do you think will be the outcome of the fight on January 15? Will it be as easy for Joe Smith Jr. as speculated, or will this unexpected change work against him? We will wait for Callum Johnson’s recovery and what will be his next step, at the moment it seems more likely a confrontation of Smith Jr against Callum Smith or Anthony Yarde, who undoubtedly would provide excellent fights to the fans.
